Automation

Altec is delivering what will be the state-of-the-art and one of the most modern plywood plants in North America. This system is capable of: 
<ul>
<li>Sustained production of at least 480,000 sqft per 8-hours on a 3/8” basis.</li>
<li>Can successfully peel fast-growth, plantation southern yellow pine. </li>
<li>Significantly reduced and simplified maintenance and setup requirements.</li>
<li>Able to maintain production and quality over the long-term with the operations and maintenance personnel.</li>
</ul>
The Altec Green End is installed, complete with the following improvements:
<ul>
<li>New Altec Electric spindles c/w independent AC spindle motors.</li>
<li>Electric back-up roll positioning and lift.</li>
<li>Hardened, machined fixed knife bed in carriage combined with easy-to-use, precision knife-setup table.</li>
<li>Use of Taihei-ground multi-bevel knives.</li>
<li>Incising (spiked) roller bar.</li>
<li>Electric knock-off on the veneer stackers.</li>
</ul>
In addition, it boasts additional operational improvements:
<ul>
<li>Fewer operators required</li>
<li>Simplified maintenance and setup.</li>
<li>Simplified operator interface.</li>
<li>Service contracts available, including evaluation and training of mill personnel.</li>
</ul>

A COMPLETE ALTEC GREEN END

Altec has developed a robotic strip stacking solution that requires less structure and has a lower cost than a traditional strip stacker.
Our Altec system is designed to optimize your space utilization, taking up less floor space than a traditional strip stacker, while ensuring a simpler and more reliable mechanical system.
Additional features of our custom robotic stacking system are: 
<ul>
<li>There is automatic skew correction with no need for an operator.</li>
<li>It automatically identifies trash, increasing efficiency because trash is not handled and simply ends up on the haul-back conveyor.</li>
<li>Significant labour savings are achieved. The Altec system allows the people responsible for pulling veneer strips to be repurposed in the mill or removed entirely, reducing overhead costs.</li>
<li>It automatically sorts material based on grade or moisture.</li>
</ul>

After a tornado heavily damaged the Hood Industries mill in Beaumont, MS, the company decided to rebuild the operation which will operate at a rate twice the capacity as the previous facility. Hood Industries’ plywood operation at Beaumont will be state-of-the-art and one of the most modern plywood plants in North America. For that level of green-end, Hood has selected Altec for the supply of the entire line from step-feeder to sheet stackers. The green-end aims to produce consistently high-quality, low-variance veneer with production levels above 60,000 m3 per hour.
The lathe deck will feature an Altec electric charger with Altec XY Scanner and Altec’s new electric lathe. The new electric lathe will feature electric spindles, dual AC motor spindle drive, electric backup rolls and an electric carriage featuring a new electric incised roller bar.
The dual AC motor electric spindle drive eliminates the heavy gears, chains, shafts, and large horsepower motor traditionally used to connect and drive the spindles. Each spindle will be driven in synchronous operation, providing very tight speed tolerances, and eliminating all the associated maintenance and downtime of the old-style linkage system. The motors are able to be downsized and allow for cost savings in energy consumption.
The primary and strip trays will be supplied by Altec and driven with all AC drives. The Altec Clipper Scanner uses vision and light technology to clip for grade, moisture, and defects with no contact with the ribbon. The clipper will be installed with electric-driven rolls.
The 6-bay Altec Diverter, recently installed in two other locations, is an all-new vacuum design utilizing innovative belt technology with much lower powered fans required resulting in power savings over other vacuum designs. The knockoffs are operated using servo electric motors which are ultra-precise and easily controlled.
Two 4-bin Altec Sheet Stackers will be supplied with an all-new design featuring electric servo-driven knock-off arms. This new design will eliminate the traditional pneumatic knockoffs which create ongoing costly downtime and maintenance.
The mill is scheduled to start plywood production in December 2024.

After a two-year pause due to global COVID restrictions, EWTA APA&#8217;S <a href="https://www.engineeredwood.org/info-fair">Info Fair 2022</a> will take place in sunny Florida on October 15-18. And you can bet your bottom dollar that Altec&#8217;s team will be there!
EWTA&#8217;s Info Fair is a supplier exhibition held in conjunction with APA &#8211; The Engineered Wood Association&#8217;s annual meeting. It provides face-to-face opportunities with key decision-makers in the engineered wood products industry.

Altec&#8217;s team is excited to attend <a href="https://www.iaapa.org/expos/iaapa-expo">IAAPA Expo 2022</a> in Orlando, Florida, USA, on November 16-17, 2022 in Orlando.
